About MASCA

The Massachusetts School Counselors Association, Inc. was founded in 1961 to work for the promotion, improvement and expansion of guidance and counseling in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Membership in MASCA, now about 1500 members, is open to counselors active in public and private elementary and secondary schools in the Commonwealth. In addition, graduate students enrolled in counselor education programs, post-secondary level counselors, counselor educators, and retired counselors are eligible for membership.

MASCA is affiliated nationally as a chartered state division of the American School Counselors Association, a division of the ACA. MASCA publishes the Counselor's Notebook, a monthly association newsletter, and the Comprehensive Developmental Guidance Curriculum Guide. It also conducts an annual conference, workshops and other programs throughout the year to stimulate and advance the discipline of guidance and counseling. Through its publications, workshops and seminars, MASCA actively works to help counselors better understand their role and make more effective use of skills and talents in the complex areas of counseling and guidance, studies and publicizes the functions and responsibilities of counselors, helps to upgrade and improve the guidance, counseling and related fields, provides a channel by which counselors can be brought into a more vital and influential position with educational leaders, is active in the legislative process, encourages research aimed at the improvement of the counseling profession, maintains high ethical and professional standards for counselors, and develops and implements program to foster interest in career development programs.
